School: Shadowlawn Middle School, Bartlett Why he’s part of Art for Life’s Sake: My brother plays the saxophone at our church, but he’s going to college next year. So I hope to be able to play the violin at church and take his place. What I like about Art for Life’s Sake is that there isn’t a lot of pressure, so it’s fun. And I get to see my friends. Hobbies: I like to play basketball and watch cartoons on YouTube. I collect stickers and have all kinds. And I like to practice the violin. Favorite performers: Will Smith and Martin Lawrence Favorite Books: I liked the story ¨Tuck Everything.¨ And I like the book Salt in His Shoes, a book about Michael Jordan. Personal Hero: My brother Andrew. He helps me in a lot of things. And he inspired me to go out for the basketball team at school. Career Goals: I would like to be an inventor or a toymaker. I make paper toys now. Also, I have an idea of how to make a better cellphone. In college, I want to study engineering.
School: Cordova Middle School Why she’s part of Art for Life’s Sake: Everybody in my family likes music, so I wanted to learn music too. My granddad played the saxophone. My dad played in a band in high school, and my mother sings around the house. I’m taking cello lessons in Art for Life, but I can also play the piano, clarinet and drums. Hobbies: I talk on the phone to friends, play basketball and go to basketball games. I also like to listen to music and play music. And I watch TV. Favorite Performers: Alicia Keyes. I like gospel music, especially Mary Mary. And my favorite cello player is Yo-Yo Ma. He’s the best. Favorite Books: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Encyclopedia Brown and Scooby Doo books. Personal Goals: One thing is I want to get better at playing the cello. I want to be able to play ¨Waltz of the Flowers¨ and some Beethoven. I’d also like to be able to play some gospel songs. Career Goals: I like to cook, and I like to watch cooking on TV. My favorites are Emeril Lagasse and Rachel Ray. I want to travel around the world learning about the food people eat in different countries, and then I’d like to have my own restaurant that serves food from around the world. If I’m good enough, I may even have my own cooking show on TV!
School: Cromwell Elementary Why he’s part of Art for Life’s Sake: My family wanted me to learn to play an instrument. My dad used to play the piano, and my sister takes piano lessons. But I think the violin is better. I saw somebody playing a violin on TV and it looked interesting. It’s pretty easy. Hobbies: I play football with my friends. And I love wrestling with my friends. I also watch wrestling on TV. And I collect pennies. Favorite Performers: I like all the stars of ¨High School Musical.¨ And Chris Brown. It would be cool to learn to play some Chris Brown songs on the violin. Career Goals: I want to be a professional wrestler like Cain. He’s on TV. I don’t want to play the violin for a career, but I could play for my friends and my family. Maybe I could make a CD and sell it to make some money.
School: Colonial Middle School Why she’s part of Art for Life’s Sake: I’ve been taking lessons in Art for Life for five years, and I’ve learned to play the violin and the piano. I like to learn new songs, and I like to perform. It makes me feel good when people say I played well. Favorite school activity: I sing in my school’s chamber choir. I like going to the competitions and meeting other students who perform. My favorite subject at school is science, and I also like art. Hobbies: I play the violin in the Memphis Youth Symphony. I like to go shopping at the mall with my friends. And I like to talk on the phone. Favorite Performers: Zack and Vanessa Hudgens from ¨High School Musical.¨ I also like Raven Symone. Favorite books: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. Harry Potter. Nancy Drew. Career Goals: Well, it would be great to be a musician or a singer. But if that doesn’t happen, I want to be a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher or a veterinarian. I still haven’t made up my mind.
School: 7th grade, Harding Academy Favorite activity: Music! I play the violin, piano and flute. My favorite instrument is the violin. I’ve been taking Suzuki lessons with Art for Life’s Sake since I was six years old. The best part is performing in front of others at an Art for Life’s Sake concert. The people who see me play say they admire me. Hobbies: I like acting and drama. At my school, I am going to be in “Seussical the Musical.” I’ve been putting on plays at home since I was really little. My mom doesn’t like my plays nearly as much as hearing me play violin. Goals: I would like to play violin in the Memphis Youth Symphony, and then in the real Memphis Symphony. Favorite performer: Raven Symone. Secret Ambition: To write a play that is performed at The Orpheum, and then get my star on the sidewalk!
